Tell us the story of how you started Mad Plant Ladies?
Mum has always been mad about plants, I remember her dragging me around to nurseries as a kid for what felt like hours!! She got her love for plants from her mum, her garden in Currumbin was a beautiful, lush jungle with plants hanging everywhere!
I was a late grower; my love affair with indoor plants only began through my Mad Plant Ladies journey and through the growth and change of our business. Mad Plant Ladies started casually in 2015 at local market stalls, selling our thrifted treasures planted with succulents, handmade concrete planters and kokedama's. We then started stocking some cute and quirky planters as there just wasn't anywhere to buy fun planters at the time, then quickly realised we needed indoor plants to put in our no worries planters- succulents just weren't cutting it!
Mad Plant Ladies has been a side hustle for us for may years and this year we have decided to go full time and take our small business from the markets to taking a big leap of faith (with the encouragement of our small biz friends) and jumped into the big retail world with our first POP-UP in a shopping centre at Hyperdome back in November last year.
What do you love most about working together as a Mum and daughter duo?
I love working with Mum as we get to spend so much time together and doing something that we love! We do some long hours.. small biz can sometimes feel like a 24/7 gig (that we couldn't do without some really supportive family and friends), but we love it and when we are at our pop-up together and chatting with our customers, it doesn't feel like work at all!
What’s your favourite part of running Mad Plant Ladies? (What gets you up every morning?)
For us it's the drive that we are doing something together that we both love and that our customers love! Seeing and hearing feedback from everyone each day about how much joy our pop-up brings to them makes us so happy, we do it all for that reason! I get to work with my Mum, I have the flexibility of working with my 10 month old baby, it really is my dream job!
Why do you enjoy popping-up at Hyperdome?
The Hyperdome is so local for us and for all of our customers that we have met through our markets over the years. Plus the convenience! It's so easily accessible being just off the M1 and and parking is super easy (Bonus: We can get all our essential (and lots of non-essential) shopping done while we are there!).
